Pic of the Week - My DVD
This week is being dedicated to spreading the word about my Presentation called
"But, There is Treatment." I am getting wonderful testimonials, and just showed it to the Cancer Committee at Loudoun Hospital. This group consisted of oncology physicians, nurses, dietitians, a social worker, a radiation oncology director, and an executive director of cancer services. Yes, I am getting brave!
They laughed, and clapped, and asked questions afterwards. The first thing one of the physicians said was that my story was inspiring.
You can see a part of my Presentation by clicking on the attached promo DVD. It's just a "tease," only 18 of the 140 slides in my show. And, again, if you know of an organization who would like to to hire an Inspirational Speaker, please let me know.

Pic of the Week! Who would appreciate this card? Know someone who is: feeling down? sick? unemployed? This should put a smile on their face, and you can add your own message inside, i.e. "You're not alone," or "We've got your back." You can find this card by going to my website and clicking on Doggy Greeting Cards at www.kathykupka.com and clicking on the Miscellaneous section. Have a great weekend!

(The one of Rosebud would be great for Father's Day, http://www.kathykupka.com/.)

Pic(s) of the Week - April 30, 2010
I met Fancy and Rocco at the Mary Elizabeth Miller Radiation Oncology Center (Dr. Au's office) in Leesburg, VA. Below are their proud Moms' stories. They are so loving!! (I think I'm going to sign Buddie up for training!)
"Fancy is certified by Therapy Dogs International (TDI). She also visits at the Morningside Assisted Living facility in Leesburg and the Nursing and Rehab section of the Leesburg Hospital. She and I have participated in obedience and agility classes with the Dulles Gateway Obedience Training Club (DGOTC). She enjoys outings in the country and fetching a tennis ball." Marion Lee
"Rocco tested for his American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen at just 12 months old--which is very young. He is certified through Therapy Dog International and passed that test when he was just 14 months--again very young. Rocco was trained by me (I train dogs), so I'm very proud of him. Rocco continues with AKC obedience trials and is working on his Companion Dog certificate. Rocco works just at Loudoun on Tuesday afternoons. (We have been doing this since December 2009.) Anyone can become a friend of Rocco through Facebook by joining "Friends of Rocco". Annie Larson
And, now they are also models! You can find their cards under the Get Well section of my Doggy Greeting Cards on my website, www.kathykupka.com.

Pic of the Week - April 19, 2010
My brother says he enjoys getting my Pic of the Week because then he knows what day it is. Of course it's not Friday, I'm just late!
This week I thought I'd send you an image from my Cancer Patient Slide Show Presentation called "But There IS Treatment." The image above is in the beginning of my story. When I started to complain of back pain, I was told to stretch more before I exercised. (Back pain turned out to be crushed vertebrae caused by having Multiple Myeloma.)
Nando and Bjork were wonderful models. Bjork was a loving dog, and she just passed away at sixteen years old. As you can see, her great expression is helping me to spread the word about Multiple Myeloma through my presentation.
My next speaking event will be at the Middleburg Women's Networking Group luncheon at the Briar Patch Bed & Breakfast Inn this Wednesday, April 21, 2010. Still time to make reservations. The meeting is for women all over Northern Virginia.
If you know of a cancer support group or organization looking for an inspirational speaker, please let me know, or check my website for more information.

Sorry, no Pic of the Week! I'm taking this opportunity to let everyone know about my cancer patient presentation that is finally off the ground and running!
My presentation is called "But There is Treatment" because those were the first words I really heard my doctor say when he diagnosed me with Multiple Myeloma. The multi-media art work below was done by my friend, Pam Margraf; and the description of my presentation was written by my daughter, Shani. I'll let the comments/reviews further below tell you about the reactions I received from showing it to a MM support group, and to a group of photographers at the VPPA convention. In April, I'll be presenting it to a MM support group at Johns Hopkins, and to the Middleburg Womens' Networking group at the Briar Patch Bed and Breakfast Inn.
If you know of a cancer support group (for any cancer), and/or a hospital near you that may be looking for an inspirational speaker, please let me know.
Thank you!
Kathy

"Kathy is an inspirational speaker for cancer patients. "But There IS Treatment" is her story. Her entertaining and informative slide show uses images of her canine-clients to chronicle Kathy's journey in life from single mom to professional photographer to cancer patient. It is a concise overview, aimed to share her experience dealing with unexpected hurdles; a serious story told with humor. The precious images of dogs, with those candid expressions only seen in children and animals, capture and reflect the range of feelings, both physical and emotional, that one can expect to go through in the course of cancer, from diagnosis to treatment to 'afterward.' All cancer experiences are unique, but through this presentation, Kathy hopes to encourage and inspire confidence to all those experiencing it, at whatever stage, through sharing the common thread; the scary roller coaster-effect that CAN have you smiling at the end, and enriched by the experience gained along the way." Shani Sands
Comments from the Multiple Myeloma Support Group in Fairfax, VA in December 2009:
“We all really enjoyed your excellent presentation at the MM Support group today. It was humorous and informative. I think that anyone would benefit and enjoy hearing and seeing your story. Thanks so much for coming to our group.” Susan Carlson RN MM Group Facilitator
“Sorry to have missed our Tuesday meeting……heard ....that Kathy Kupka’s slide show was a hit..” Sabine Gnesdiloff, LCSW, OSW-C Program Manager, Life with Cancer LWC Family Center 8411 Pennell Street, Fairfax, VA
"Your presentation was both entertaining and informative." Dennis, MM patient
Below are comments from my state photography convention last week in Richmond, VA:
"The presentation was wonderful!!! The music went well with your slides and story. The doggie faces were just right for the story. Your timeline was great and you didn't get off of the subject. You added humor and hope to a subject that is challenging to say the least. The title "But There is Treatment" was an excellent way to start!! I wish more people could see and hear your program and meet you. It would give people facing multiple myeloma hope, and those without it an understanding of what one must go through to keep ahead of it. Also they would be more at ease talking to patients with the illness. Keep up the great work!! Thank you so much for sharing your story with us at the Virginia Professional Photographer's Association Convention. It was an inspiration to all!!! "
Sharon Younce, Photographer, VPPA 2010 Convention Chairman
"Kathy, I cannot express how grateful I am for you to give your presentation to the VPPA on Sunday, February 21, 2010. The gathering was quite moved by your candid and informative slide show and remarks....You did a fantastic job! Sharon kept laughing and Polly had gator tears. You hit both sides of the emotions. Jim Carpenter, Photographer
"I really enjoyed your program it was informing with the use of the dogs. The different dogs were great and a wonderful way to get the truth about the disease while the humor made me laugh. I hope a lot of people will have the opportunity to see your program." Jan Carson, Photographer
"Kathy, that wonderful smile you constantly gave to us throughout your presentation immediately put everyone at ease while bringing an awareness to a lesser known form of cancer, Multiple Myeloma. The pictures of the dogs' expressions blend seamlessly with the story you tell. "But There Is Treatment" is a heart warming story for all. " Jim Sanders, Photographer

My heart is breaking because I've been housebound with a flu for the past two weeks, and now will never get out with 30" of snow expected!!
Serious - This is a nice card if you can't find the right words, or if you can't think of anything to say to someone whose heart must be breaking.
Sarcasm - i.e., This is for my sister, Ellen, who will probably not be able to get home from Hawaii tomorrow because of the snow.
This card has so many possibilities!
